"Holidaymakers staying in Cuban hotels should never be exposed to food-related illness"

Salmonella confirmed by couple who spent holiday at Sol Rio de Luna y Mares Cuba

Sol Rio de Luna y Mares Cuba
One couple spent their honeymoon at the Sol Rio de Luna y Mares Hotel during August 2011 and on the return to the UK a salmonella infection was confirmed.

The hotel is featured by Thomas Cook, First Choice and Thomson. Thomas Cook are said to be aware that the number of holidaymakers reporting illness had increased and some health and safety investigations have taken place.

Reports included undercooked chicken being served, birds flying around in the restaurants and many flies around the food, all of which can cause and spread serious infections. During the evenings, holidaymakers also saw bats flying around the restaurants.

Holidaymakers who became ill at the Sol Rio de Luna y Mares, Guardalavaca, Cuba, suffered symptoms of severe diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever and subsequent dehydration which can often be linked to food poisoning. Food should be handled, stored and cooked correctly and always covered, to prevent this type of infection something which, according to reports, was not the case at this hotel.
