"Many cases of food poisoning result from poor hygiene standards in Dominican Republic hotels"
BBC uncovers food poisoning in Dominican Republic
AUGUST 2010
The BBC programme, Secret Tourist, revealed shocking standards of food and hygiene at hotels in the Dominican Republic.

The programme was aired in August, 2010, and sent a family to stay in the hotel, undercover and check out the facilities. Poor maintenance was highlighted at the Fun Royale Tropicale Hotel. Also, experts took swabs from the restaurant chairs at the hotel, after guests complained of bird droppings on the dining tables.
Water samples were also taken, and Legionella was found in the hot water system, which can lead to Legionnaire´s Disease, causing serious illness. Food served buffet-style was re-heated and re-served day after day, which could have been linked to gastric illness, which many of the guests were suffering from.
Tests carried out on the restaurant chairs and tables returned positive for Campylobacter, which can cause symptoms of Gastroenteritis, including stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea. Over 50% of birds carry Campylobacter, which can be spread in bird faeces.
