"If diarrhoea is caused by poor standards of food and hygiene, holidaymakers should claim"
Travellers´ Diarrhoea
One of the most common and distressing illnesses encountered by holidaymakers abroad in package holiday hotels is Travellers´ Diarrhoea which affects thousands of people every year.
Anne Thomson, Head of our Holiday Illness Compensation Claims Department, says: “Travellers´ Diarrhoea is more common than most people think and one of the most common causes of travellers’ diarrhoea is E.coli. If holidaymakers become ill with symptoms of severe diarrhoea whilst staying at a package holiday hotel, they should seek medical advice as they could be suffering from E.Coli, Cryptosporidium, Shigella, Campylobacter or Salmonella. On return home please contact me on 080001 54321 or fill in the online claim form to discuss a claim for compensation.”
When does Diarrhoea commonly occur?
Diarrhoea occurs when the normal pattern of the stool is disrupted causing stool movements to be frequent and liquid-like. Diarrhoea is often accompanied by stomach cramps and bloating and sometimes vomiting. When patients suffer diarrhoea, the normal function of the intestine changes and it absorbs fluids back into the intestine which are then expelled from the body in liquid form.
What are the major causes of Travellers’ Diarrhoea?
Travellers´ Diarrhoea affects international travellers and is usually caused by a bacterial infection often linked to eating or drinking contaminated foods and liquids.
Fly contamination is a common cause of illness and once flies find their way on to food in holiday hotels which is then eaten by guests, diarrhoea quickly results.
Can Travellers´ Diarrhoea be prevented?
Travellers´ Diarrhoea can be prevented in holiday hotels if food handlers adhere to strict standards of food hygiene. You can also help yourself by only drinking bottled water where the seal is intact, only eating food served at the correct temperature and avoiding undercooked meat and poultry or food which is left uncovered and exposed to fly contamination.
