Legionnaire´s Disease
Legionnaire´s disease is a type of pneumonia or lung infection
Legionella bacteria are found in the environment and thrive in warm water and warm and damp places. In their normal environment legionella bacteria don´t normally cause infections, man-made water systems can provide environments where legionella bacteria increase in large numbers. This can result in either an outbreak of Legionaire´s Disease or an individual case.
The most common sources of Legionaire´s Disease include:
• Re-circulating water in air-conditioning and cooling systems in holiday hotels
• Whirlpool spas and other warm water baths
• Water reservoirs in humidifiers
• Decorative fountains
• Nebulisers in respiration machines used in hospital to maintain patient’s breathing
• Cooling towers
Infection occurs when a person breathes in water droplets contaminated by the legionella bacteria. It is not passed from one person to another or from drinking contaminated water.
Incubation period for Legionaire´s Disease is 2 – 10 days after first being infected.
Symptoms include high fever with sweating, severe headache, shortness of breath, pains in the chest, a worsening cough and muscle aches and pains. Many people who recover will experience a general fatigue and lack of energy, plus difficulty concentrating. Joint pain and muscle weakness is also quite common. These symptoms can last for some months.
