Shigella is a bacteria. There are 4 different species of Shigella, which include:

Symptoms of Shigella Infections and how to claim compensation for holiday illness
The organism invades the cells lining the large bowel and causes abdominal pain and diarrhoea and is sometimes accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting and high temperatures.
Shigella is very contagious and spreads quickly from person to person. Although transmission via food is less common than with salmonella, contamination of food with human sewage (either directly or through contaminated water) has led to some severe Shigella outbreaks - especially from cold, uncooked foods such as salads.
Shigella is a major cause of diarrhoea in travellers in developing countries. It has been suggested that flies may spread the infection from person to person as the disease is most common at the time of year when the fly population is highest.
